Nano filtration technology is the next step in the spectrum of membrane-based treatment systems after UF and before RO. NF is also a pressure-driven separation process wherein the filtration process takes place on a selective separation layer formed by a semi-permeable membrane. The driving force of the separation process is the pressure difference between the feed (retentate) and the filtrate (permeate) side at the separation layer of the membrane. However, because of its selectivity, one or several components of a dissolved mixture are retained by the membrane while water and substances with a molecular weight <200 D are able to permeate the semi-permeable separation layer. NF plants are used for a wide range of treatment applications such as hardness reduction, juice extraction, dairy processes, dye removal, removal of divalent / polyvalent cations and high molecular ions. NF is also widely used in the tertiary treatment of ETPs apart from other industrial and commercial applications. NF operates at low and medium pressure. The feed pressure to nano membranes is lower compared to RO systems.

NF is used where high-salt rejection from the feed stream is not necessary. NF is capable of virtually removing cysts, bacteria, viruses, disinfection by-products (DBP) like CHCs and THMs as well as organic-related colours. NF is also widely used to remove herbicides, pesticides and other organic contaminants from surface and ground waters used for public drinking water supplies but leaves the dissolved minerals.

NF membranes have a nominal pore size of approximately 0.001 microns (1 NM in size) and a MWCO (Molecular weight cut-off) of 1,000 to 1,00,000 daltons. Pumping water through these membrane pores requires a higher operating pressure than MF or UF. Normal operating pressure required for NF is in the range of 90 - 150 psi.

NF membranes is an attractive alternative to lime-softening or resin-softening technologies. Termed as membrane softening, NF effectively reduces the hardness content in the feed water. Since NF operates on significantly lower operating pressure, the energy costs are also lower than for an RO system.
